Many graduates finish school with theory but no practical skills.

At Techbridge University College, we change that.

Ghanaian NGO Turns Textile Waste into Skills Training for Students, Seeks Government Support

A Ghanaian NGO is transforming textile waste into practical training for students, turning fabric cut-offs from fashion houses into dresses, bags, doormats, and armrests, while calling for government support to expand the program.

The founder, Mad Christiana speaking after a visit to technical and vocational schools, said the initiative began when she saw usable material being discarded as waste.

“Putting the tester cut-offs together we can use them to produce something beneficial instead of allowing them to pollute the environment,” she said.

“These tester cut-offs after sewing, the leftovers can be used to produce something meaningful.”

Students in the program use the donated scraps to create products, giving them hands-on experience without the cost of buying new fabric.

The founder said this approach makes practical sessions more accessible for schools with limited budgets.

But logistics remain a challenge. She described moving cut-offs from fashion houses in a private car, transporting them between schools, and struggling with storage space and supplies like needles and thread.
