SSNIT has switched on a nationwide telehealth platform, giving Ghana’s retirees direct phone access to doctors without the hassle of hospital queues or transport costs.

Announced by the Ghanaianannouncer in June 2026, the service targets 267,000 pensioners under the SSNIT scheme. It allows them to book virtual consultations, receive e-prescriptions, and get medical advice from home using basic phones or smartphones.

At the launch, SSNIT Director-General Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang said the move is about dignity and access.
“Aging comes with mobility challenges and frequent hospital visits. With telehealth, we are bringing healthcare to their living rooms. It saves time, reduces cost, and protects them from exposure to infections,” he explained.
Trust officials say the platform is linked to NHIS, so most consultations and prescribed drugs will be covered. Family members can also join calls, which helps caregivers manage chronic illnesses like diabetes, high blood pressure, and arthritis that affect many elderly.
The project is part of broader government digitization efforts, including MahamaCares, to expand health access for vulnerable populations. SSNIT will train pensioners through regional offices and partner with retiree associations to onboard users.
For pensioners in rural areas, the service removes a major barrier: traveling long distances just for a routine check up
