A Nutrition Officer who is with the Ghana Health Service, Catherine Adu-Asare, has called on Ghanaians to eat healthy foods to prevent contracting non – communicable diseases (NCDs), added that were difficult to address.
She said 41 million people died of NCDs across the world yearly, saying that it was more prevalent in developing countries as eight in 10 people died in developing countries were due to NCDs.
The Nutritionist said some of the warning signs of diabetes, including eating more, sweating, urinating more, losing weight, drinking plenty and eating more.
Mrs Adu-Asare also mentioned some of the risk factors of the disease, including drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco, sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating, etc.
According to her, some factors that caused the NCDs disease were unavoidable such as age, gender, race and family history and others, and added that, with healthy eating and taking the precautions, such as exercising, one could avoid the disease and called on individuals to lead healthy lifestyles by eating more plant, avocados, nuts, olive oils, seeds, proteins such as fish, legumes.
She called on individuals to avoid artificial additives and eat healthy foods to promote good health.
Mr Emmanuel Fiagbey, the Executive Director, also introduced the participants to the Meatless Monday initiative, said it wasa global movement that encouraged people to reduce meat in their diet for their healthy and health of planet.
Mr Fiagbey continued that, eating less meat and healthier plant based foods could help reduce the incidence of chronic preventable diseases,added that the initiative was to encouraged individuals to skip meat once a week to prevent the NCDs.
Mrs Denyoh, for her part, called on individuals to go for regular check ups so that any problem in their system would be detected.
It was organised by the Communication initiatives for Change (CiC), in collaboration with Mothers Club Development For Community leaders and groups in Nima- Mamobi.
They said these at a Meatless Monday Ghana Groups Education Seminar on Healthy Eating For the prevention of Non communicable Diseases.
