Preparations for the reopening of Obuasi Senior High Technical School have intensified as the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service visited the school.

The visit on October 26, 2026, was to ascertain the level of preparedness and the safety of the environment before continuing students return to campus.
Obuasi SHTS has been closed since August after students went on rampage to protest alleged sexual misconduct by the headmaster. Property was destroyed in the process, forcing authorities to suspend academic work.
The headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, is currently on interdiction after 19 female students accused him of sexual assault. The allegations were uncovered in a documentary by JoyNews’ Manasseh Azure Awuni.
Addressing stakeholders during the tour, Dr. Lartey said government will not compromise on the safety and welfare of students.
She assured that her outfit is working with the GES to reinforce security arrangements, expand counselling services and build trust between staff and students.
“This system is designed to proactively monitor and address issues before they get out of hand, so that such unfortunate incidents do not happen again,” she stated.
The Gender Minister and the GES boss also engaged management and students to listen to their concerns and to ensure the school is ready for full academic work.
