The days of photocopying the Ghana Card for official transactions are over.

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has warned that any institution that continues to photocopy the card or verify identity by visual inspection risks prosecution and a fine of up to GH¢24,000.
The warning came as the Authority’s Biometric Verification Taskforce began a nationwide compliance check on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
Speaking in Accra on Monday, the Head of Corporate Affairs at the NIA, Mr. Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, said the grace period for institutions to comply with the National Identity Register (Amendment) Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2523) has expired.
“The law is now in force. From tomorrow, our task force will be on the streets to ensure institutions are complying,” he said.
Under L.I. 2523, which came into force on June 9, 2026, identity verification must be done biometrically — using fingerprints, facial features or iris details stored on the card’s chip.
Banks, telcos, hospitals, NHIS providers, insurers, schools and government agencies are among the institutions affected.
Mr. Darlas dismissed rumours that Ghanaians must apply for new cards.
“No one needs a new Ghana Card. No one needs to register biometrics again. The card you have is still valid,” he emphasised.
He urged the public to report institutions still demanding photocopies to the Task Force hotline on 030-2999-309.
