NIA Cracks Whip: 13 Officers Axed Over Ghana Card Extortion In Upper East

By Mavis Paintsil

Thirteen officials of the National Identification Authority have been sanctioned for allegedly extorting money from parents during the free Ghana Card registration for children.

Six of them have been arrested, while seven others have been dismissed.

The incident occurred at the Galaka registration centre in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region during the mass registration for children between 6 and 14 years.

According to a press release issued on October 29 by the Corporate Affairs Directorate and signed by Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, parents complained that some registration officers were demanding unauthorized fees before registering their wards, despite the exercise being declared free.

The six suspects identified by the parents were picked up by the Bawku West District Police and are currently assisting with investigations.

The remaining seven were sacked after an internal probe established that they knew about the illegal charges but failed to report the conduct to management.

The Authority has warned all field staff that it has zero tolerance for extortion and that any officer found demanding money from applicants will face severe sanctions.

It reminded the public that the Ghana Card registration for children is completely free and urged citizens to report any form of extortion through its official channels.
