Children With Down Syndrome Need NHIS Support – DSAG

By Mavis Paintsil, Accra

Children with Down syndrome are being denied essential healthcare because key therapies are not covered by the NHIS, the Down Syndrome Association of Ghana says.

The Association wants the health insurance scheme expanded to include long-term interventions such as speech therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy.

Speaking at the 2026 Down Syndrome Awareness Month celebration in Accra, Executive Director Agnes Teiko Nyemi-Tei said families are overburdened by the cost of care, with many mothers left to raise the children alone.

The celebration, marked with a Family Fun and Therapy Day, was organised jointly by DSAG, Galaxy International School and SENA Pediatric Therapy Centre.

It assembled parents, caregivers, therapists and teachers for interactive sessions on learning and inclusion.

Mrs Nyemi-Tei also appealed for social protection support through LEAP and the creation of district assessment centres to identify and address developmental needs early.

She said October remains a critical month for amplifying the voices of persons with Down syndrome and challenging stigma against disability.
