Ghana’s war on illegal mining:NAIMOS leads decisive operations in Oda river forest reserve

By Mavis Paintsil

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has scored a major victory in the fight against illegal mining in Ghana.

In a joint operation with the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC), NAIMOS dismantled entrenched illegal mining networks within the Oda River Forest Reserve in the Ashanti Region on October 23, 2025.

Key Highlights of the Operation:

  • Arrests: 15 suspected illegal miners and 9 armed imposters posing as National Security operatives were apprehended.
  • Seized Items: One pistol with three rounds of ammunition, a toy pistol, a pump-action shotgun with three cartridges, two handcuffs, and eight pouches were confiscated.
  • Bribery Attempt Foiled: NAIMOS operatives rejected a bribe of GH₵100,000 and GH₵20,000 “chop money” from individuals attempting to secure the release of arrested suspects.
  • Environmental Damage: The forest reserve was found to be severely degraded, with vegetation cleared, land degraded, and water bodies heavily polluted.

NAIMOS’ Commitment to Enforcement

The Director of Operations at NAIMOS, Colonel Dominic Buah, commended the joint effort, describing the operation as “a model of inter-agency cooperation and enforcement excellence.” He emphasized that no individual or group will be allowed to exploit Ghana’s natural resources with impunity.
