Cancer Crisis in Africa: A Call to Action

Accra, Ghana – The PMABC-Precision Medicine for Aggressive Breast Cancer Symposium, held at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons Auditorium, shed light on the alarming rise of cancer cases in Africa. Dr. Hannah Ayettey Anie, Secretary General of the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AOTIC), revealed that over 24,000 new cancer cases are recorded annually on the continent, a staggering four-fold increase from 7,000 cases 20 years ago.

According to Dr. Ayettey Anie, unique challenges such as genetic differences and socio-economic problems are contributing factors to the spread of cancer in Africa. The symposium, organized in collaboration with AOTIC, showcased research conducted in the past, present, and future directions, highlighting the organization’s commitment to empowering young researchers and finding solutions to cancer-related cases globally.

AOTIC, the largest Pan-African Cancer Organisation Center in Africa, is at the forefront of the fight against cancer. Dr. Ayettey Anie emphasized the importance of local research and capacity building, stating that the organization is dedicated to introducing young people to cancer research and not solely relying on research conducted by other organizations.

The statistics are alarming, but the symposium offers hope. By sharing research findings and collaborating with global experts, AOTIC aims to find solutions to the growing cancer burden in Africa. As the continent grapples with the increasing cancer prevalence, the work of AOTIC and partners like PMABC serves as a beacon of hope
