CSOs, Media urged to drive constitutional review process

By Mavis Paintsil, Accra

The Programme Officer of the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Vera Abena Addo, has called on civil society organisations (CSOs) and the media to play a pivotal role in the ongoing constitutional review process.

Speaking at a two-day capacity-building workshop in Kumasi, Addo stressed that the involvement of CSOs and the media is crucial to rallying citizen support for the review process.

“We think that it is important for CSOs and the media to be actively involved to rally the citizenry to support the constitutional review process,” she said.

Addo highlighted the need for inclusive participation, stating that the review process should not be left to politicians alone. “All citizens must fully understand the entire process in order to support the reform agenda,” she emphasized.

The workshop, organised by CDD-Ghana and Star Ghana Foundation, aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of the constitution review process and equip CSOs with advocacy and engagement skills.

Vice-President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Rebecca Ekpe, described the ongoing review process as a “critical opportunity” to rebuild Ghana’s democratic institutions and public trust.

She noted that previous reform processes had stalled due to limited citizen involvement.

“Citizen involvement is important because citizens’ voices can shape what recommendations are prioritised, reducing the likelihood of reforms being undermined by partisan interests,” Ekpe said.
