A Former President John Mahama has emphasized that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA) is the most ambitious integration project in Africa’s history, requiring deliberate policies to drive industrialization.
Speaking at the Africa Trade Summit 2026, he highlighted the need to link AFCFTA to industrial policy, infrastructure investment, and enterprise development.
Mahama stressed that AFCFTA won’t automatically industrialize Africa, urging African leaders to reduce non-tariff barriers, simplify customs procedures, and invest in digital trade infrastructure.
He cited Ghana’s experience, emphasizing the importance of deliberate policies, reliable infrastructure, skills development, and macroeconomic stability.
The President called for a collective effort from governments, the private sector, financial institutions, and development partners to achieve Africa’s industrial transformation.
“Governments must provide leadership and stability, while the private sector invests and innovates,” he said.
Mahama urged leaders to envision an Africa with thriving industrial corridors, integrated supply chains, and competitive factories producing for African and global markets.
“An Africa where prosperity is shared, and opportunity is created at home,” he said, emphasizing the need for urgency and resolve to turn this vision into reality .
