Government offers support to families of El-wak Stadium stampede victims

By Mavis Paintsil, Accra

The government has announced plans to support the families of six young women who lost their lives in a stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium during a military recruitment exercise.

The families will be allowed to nominate qualified relatives as replacements for the deceased recruits, while injured survivors will be automatically enlisted into the Ghana Armed Forces once they are declared fit.

Deputy Minister of Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, made the announcement during a visit to the bereaved families and injured victims, accompanied by Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey.

The government has also promised to provide psychosocial support to the affected families and survivors, who are going through trauma.

The ministry will cover the cost of traditional burial arrangements for the deceased.

An investigation into the incident has been launched, and the officers who supervised the recruitment exercise have been directed to step aside.

The ongoing recruitment exercise has been suspended until new, safer procedures are put in place.

The incident, which occurred last Wednesday, resulted in the deaths of six young women, while 22 others sustained injuries.
