The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has clarified that certificates obtained from the Swiss Management Centre (SMC) University are not recognized as terminal degrees and do not qualify holders to serve as faculty members of a university in Ghana or use them for purposes of academic or career progression.
Accreditation Status
According to GTEC, SMC University has never received institutional accreditation either from its home country, Switzerland, or from the Republic of Ghana.
The Commission revealed that the Certificate of Recognition issued to SMC University in 2012 was later revoked due to quality assurance and accreditation breaches.
Programme Accreditation
GTEC further explained that the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programme offered by SMC University, along with all other programmes, has never received Programme Accreditation, which is a mandatory requirement for delivery.
Directive to ATU
The Commission has directed the Accra Technical University (ATU) to reverse the promotion of Jones Ntiamoah, who had presented a DBA certificate from SMC University, to the rank of Associate Professor.
ATU has been instructed to provide evidence of compliance by November 30, 2025.
Implications
This development has significant implications for individuals in Ghana who have obtained certificates from SMC University. GTEC’s Director-General, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, has been campaigning to raise awareness about the invalidity of such certificates in Ghana.
GTEC’s Stance
The Commission has reiterated its commitment to enforcing regulatory standards and ensuring that only accredited institutions and programmes are recognized in Ghana.
Failure to comply with GTEC’s directives will result in regulatory sanctions against institutions.
