Ghana will invest in large-scale grain silos in the 2027 Budget to address storage gaps created by increasing cereal production.

Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, made the announcement at the first Annual General Meeting of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) in Accra.
He said the move is aimed at preventing bumper harvests from turning into post-harvest losses and low prices for farmers.
According to him, Ghana produced about 4.6 million tonnes of maize in 2025 against an estimated domestic requirement of 3.6 million tonnes, leaving a surplus of close to one million tonnes.
“Adequate allocations will be made in next year’s budget for the construction of silos for the storage of grains,” Mr Opoku stated.
He said the investment would strengthen NAFCO’s capacity to mop up excess grains, build strategic reserves and stabilize prices.
The Minister noted that silos, unlike conventional warehouses, provide controlled conditions to store large volumes for longer periods, reducing exposure to moisture, pests and contamination.
He charged NAFCO to expand its aggregation and purchasing network to ensure farmers benefit from the increased production.
Currently, NAFCO holds 20,443 tonnes of grains – a figure far below the one million-tonne surplus recorded.
Mr Opoku said government expects the planned silos to complement other infrastructure such as drying facilities, collection centres, transport and processing linkages to secure national food security.
