The Ghana has rolled out its first National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, with government targeting AI as the next driver for public sector reform, job creation, and economic growth.
The policy, launched this month, sets a roadmap for embedding artificial intelligence across governance, agriculture, healthcare, and education over the next decade.
Officials say the move is part o,Accra efforts to modernize service delivery and reduce inefficiencies in government. Under the plan, ministries and agencies will adopt AI tools for data processing, policy analysis, and automating routine civil service tasks.
In key sectors, the strategy pushes for practical applications: smart farming systems for farmers, AI-assisted diagnosis in hospitals, and adaptive learning platforms in schools. Government also committed to building local capacity by training students, graduates, and public workers in AI and data science through universities and innovation hubs.
To support this, the strategy includes investment in digital infrastructure secure data centers and curated national datasets needed to develop and run AI models locally.
A regulatory component was also introduced to manage risks. The framework covers data privacy, algorithmic fairness, and safeguards against misinformation and misuse of AI technologies.
Tech firms, researchers, and development partners present at the launch pledged to support implementation. Government noted that partnerships will be essential to ensure the technology delivers inclusive benefits and positions Ghana competitively within Africa’s digital economy.
The announcement adds AI to the list of priority areas under the government’s broader development reset agenda.
