GHANA HOSTS LAUNCH OF WORLD UNITY AND PEACE SUMMIT, URGES GLOBAL COMMITMENT TO DIALOGUE

By Mavis Paintsil, Accra

World Unity and Peace International has officially launched the World Unity and Peace Summit in Accra, describing it as the start of a renewed global push for peace, unity and justice.

Speaking at the media launch at the Ghana International Press Centre, organizers said the summit was conceived as more than a one-off event. The vision, they stated, is to create a permanent global movement focused on peace education, youth leadership, intercultural understanding, sustainable development, humanitarian cooperation and conflict resolution.

“Today marks the beginning of a renewed global commitment to peace, unity, justice, and our shared humanity,” the address noted. “We are deeply honoured that Ghana has been chosen as the birthplace of this important initiative, and we warmly welcome the world to the land of peace, hospitality, and hope.”

Ghana was praised as a symbol of democracy and stability. Organizers said the choice of Accra sends a message that transcends politics, race and religion that humanity’s future depends on cooperation.

The speech acknowledged global progress in science and technology but pointed to ongoing suffering caused by war, displacement, poverty and division. It stressed that lasting peace cannot be achieved by governments alone.

“We believe that governments alone cannot build lasting peace. Businesses have a role. Religious institutions have a role. Traditional leaders have a role. The media has a role. Young people have a role. Women have a role. Every citizen of the world has a role. Peace is everyone’s responsibility.”

The summit, organizers said, is not about taking sides in conflicts but about building bridges. It called on nations experiencing tensions, including the United States and Iran, and Russia and Ukraine, to pursue dialogue, diplomacy and respect for international law.

“From this day forward, let this summit become a meeting place where ideas become action, dialogue becomes partnership, and partnership becomes lasting transformation,” the address urged.

The media was also called upon to carry the message of wisdom over hostility and cooperation over confrontation. International partners were invited to Ghana to contribute ideas, experiences and cultures to the peace effort.

“Together, let us shape a future where diplomacy triumphs over conflict, understanding triumphs over misunderstanding, and unity triumphs over division,” it added.

In closing, organizers thanked the Government of Ghana, development partners, diplomatic missions, traditional authorities, religious leaders, sponsors and volunteers for making the launch possible.

The address ended with a direct appeal to individuals.
“Peace is not merely the responsibility of presidents, kings, diplomats, or international organizations. Peace begins with each one of us. It begins in our homes. It begins in our communities. It begins in our words. It begins in our actions. And when millions choose peace, the world is transformed.”

The World Unity and Peace Summit is expected to bring together governments, international institutions, civil society, faith leaders, businesses, academia, youth and women to develop practical solutions to global challenges.
