The Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry (GhCCI) has lamented the neglect of indigenous contractors, saying experienced local players who have built the nation’s roads over the years are being sidelined for new faces.
The concern was raised at an infrastructure conference organized by the Chamber to keep industry players abreast of developments in the construction sector.
According to the Chamber, you cannot build sustainable infrastructure without experience, yet many indigenous contractors have been neglected.
“You cannot make progress in business or sustainable infrastructure without experience. Most indigenous contractors have been neglected. You see a lot of new faces and the Minister was right to mention that,” he said.
He said the conference was important to bridge the information gap and keep the public and industry players informed.
“This conference has actually brought some energy, has brought some information, has put people in a position to know what is exactly going on,” he noted.
COCOBOD Roads Now Under Finance Ministry – Contractor Reveals
Touching on the controversial COCOBOD Roads project, the contractor disclosed that the project has now been transferred to the Ministry of Finance.
He said communication around the transfer has been poor, leaving many affected contractors in the dark.
“COCOBOD merely came to give us information that the Cocoa Roads project has now been given to the Ministry of Finance to take responsibility. How many of us knows this? I am a victim. I am a contractor and I did Cocoa Roads since 2021 and government is also owing,” he lamented.
He called for proper official communication to all contractors, if indeed their debts have been moved to the Finance Ministry.
“I am a contractor and I did Cocoa Roads since 2021 and government is also owing. If the debt has been transferred to the Finance Ministry, it is important that contractors are officially informed through proper channels,” he stressed.
He assured that the Chamber under his leadership will continue to organize such engagements to keep contractors, engineers and the public well informed.
“I can assure the public, the contractors and our engineers that we will continue organizing this so that we can keep the public well informed about what is going in the industry,” he added.
The Chamber has consistently complained about over GH¢44 billion debt owed to road contractors, with only about GH¢12 billion paid so far.
