The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, on Monday announced seven significant operational successes recorded by the Ghana Police Service in recent weeks, describing them as the result of sustained, intelligence-led operations across the country.
Addressing journalists at a press briefing in Accra, the IGP said the operations underscore the Service’s resolve to dismantle violent criminal networks, retrieve illegal arms and improve public safety.
According to him, the coordinated actions, carried out over the past several weeks, have led to multiple arrests, the recovery of sophisticated weapons and the disruption of armed robbery syndicates operating in several regions.
Murder of Couple Resolved
Among the cases highlighted was the murder of Dr. Jesse Amuah and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Amuah Esi, who were declared missing in April this year.
The IGP disclosed that police investigations established that the couple had been killed.
Their bodies were later recovered following searches at their home and other locations linked to them, and deposited at the Police Hospital morgue.
A 32-year-old man, Abraham Awundok, who previously worked as an errand boy for the couple, has been arrested in connection with the crime. Police said the suspect allegedly took away their mobile phones, cash and vehicle before fleeing the country.
He was subsequently placed on an INTERPOL Red Notice and was deported from Dubai to Ghana on August 30 by operatives from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and INTERPOL.
He has admitted to the offence during interrogation and remains in custody while investigations continue.
Bank Robbery Syndicate Foiled
The IGP also detailed the foiling of a planned attack on banks in Accra. He said the police had received complaints in April about criminals who monitored bank customers in Greater Accra, broke into their vehicles using master keys and stole money withdrawn from banks.
Acting on the intelligence, the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the IGP mounted surveillance across banks in Accra and Tema.
On August 13, the team tracked a gang moving in a black Hyundai Tucson with registration GS 7915-19 and an ash-coloured Toyota Highlander with registration GS 1434-18.
The suspects were said to have positioned themselves between Zenith Bank, GCB and Ecobank at Labone to launch an attack.
A swift police response foiled the attempt. Two suspects were shot dead, one escaped and one, identified as 49-year-old Augustine Okechuku Maazi, was arrested and has since been remanded.
A search of the vehicles revealed 13 different vehicle number plates and a Blow F90 pistol. Police believe the vehicles were brought in from Nigeria and re-registered with Ghanaian plates for criminal activities.
The IGP linked the same syndicate to earlier incidents, including the robbery of a woman of GH¢50,000 at Agbamaame, Tema Community 2 on May 17, and an attack on a young man at Achimota on June 11 after he had withdrawn money from a bank.
Crackdown on Mining Community Robberies
In the Western and Central enclaves, police said they have dismantled a gang that targeted gold dealers, mining sites and communities in Wassa Akropong, Diaso, Dome, Abofour Camp and the Manso area.
Between August and September 4, operations led to the arrest of five suspects and the retrieval of three AK-47 rifles, five magazines, 357 rounds of AK-47 ammunition and two vehicles. One suspect died during the operation.
Those arrested were named as Clinton Mawuli, 33, Richmond Mensah alias Master Abey, Daniel Sarfo alias Abedi, Prince Duker and Seidu Salifu, 40, who is said to be linked to other robberies and was standing trial for a bullion robbery at Offinso Abofour in July 2025.
In a related operation on August 21, the Western Regional Command arrested five persons in connection with the robbery and murder of a 40-year-old gold buyer, Seth Kobina, at Agona Fie near Agona Nkwanta.
The suspects were identified as Christopher Seyiri alias “Cross and Die”, 47, Bashiru Ibrahim, 20, Thomas Odoom alias “Wale”, 30, Amponsah, and Isaac Quayeson alias “Last Burial”, arrested at Denkyira Kwaboso. Two locally made pistols, cartridges, a metal bar and cutlasses were retrieved.
Northern Region Robberies and Buipe Market Attack
In the north, the Police Intelligence Directorate arrested three suspects — Yacouba Oumar, Abdul Alhassan Kudus and Abdul Rahman Haruna alias Saaga — for a series of robberies in Buipe, Tamale and Mion.
The group allegedly operated with AK-47 rifles and a pump-action gun along the Fumbisi-Yagaba road and sold stolen motorbikes in Tamale and Savelugu. They are also linked to the robbery and murder of a mobile money vendor at Fofulso near Damongo.
Police also announced a breakthrough in the June 29 robbery at the Buipe Cattle Market in the Savannah Region, where two mobile money vendors were attacked and GH¢430,000 taken.
Investigations led to the arrest of Yacouba Oumar, 28, and the recovery of a pump-action gun and other weapons.
The alleged mastermind, 60-year-old Alhaji Imoro Beliko, also known as Alhaji Yacouba, Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu, who is said to have supplied weapons to robbers targeting traders, was placed under surveillance and later shot when he attempted to escape on September 5. He died from gunshot wounds.
Highway Robbery and Arms Trafficking
On the Enyiresi-Sekyere stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway, police arrested a gang leader identified only as Obotan, his mother who allegedly concealed the weapon, a weapons supplier Issaka Napson, and two others, Issaka Majeed and Majeed Huzeifa, together with a 14-year-old juvenile who acted as a lookout, in connection with a highway robbery on August 18.
Exhibits retrieved included an ADLER pump-action gun, double-barrel and single-barrel guns, a locally manufactured pistol, cartridges, cutlasses, handcuffs, pepper spray, a tactical vest and an unregistered motorbike. A suspect named Tanko is still on the run.
In a separate arms-trafficking operation between June and July, the Office of the Special Operations Assistant arrested five suspects and recovered eight AK-47 assault rifles, one SMG rifle and two foreign pistols.
The suspects — Munkaila Yusif alias Karyima, 34, Abdulai Fatawu Boniface, 32, Abdallah Imrana Gomda, 43, Sualesu Sheriffa, 20, and Ibrahim Adams alias Ibru, 35 — have been remanded by the Accra Circuit Court. The case has been adjourned to September 8.
Mr. Yohuno commended officers involved in the operations and thanked President John Dramani Mahama and government for logistical support, particularly the provision of armoured pick-ups.
He appealed to the public to continue providing credible information on suspects at large via the nearest police station or emergency line 191, assuring confidentiality.
