The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to move quickly against unauthorised developments obstructing drains and watercourses across the region.

Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Ocloo announced the directives at a press briefing in Accra, outlining fresh measures to curb flooding as the rainy season intensifies.

Under the new orders, assemblies must inspect all watercourses and pull down structures built without approval that block free water flow.
They are also to clear refuse from drainage channels and deploy sanitation task forces after every downpour to prevent debris buildup. ee53
The council extended the crackdown to unauthorised lorry stations operating on roads and public spaces, citing traffic obstruction and safety risks during emergencies.
Environmental health officers and NADMO officials have been tasked to ramp up public education on sanitation and flood prevention. ee53
Minister Ocloo warned that enforcement will be strict. In a separate warning earlier this month, she said officers who approve permits for illegal buildings risk being transferred to northern Ghana as disciplinary action.
The directives form part of GARCC’s broader plan to protect lives and property by ensuring drains and Ramsar sites remain unobstructed during heavy rains.
