Campaign against air pollution reaches schools in Ayawaso Central municipality

In a bid to educate the public about the dangers of air pollution, Infinity 970, a not-for-profit organization, has embarked on a public education campaign in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.

The organization, in collaboration with Breathe Cities, engaged students from various schools in the Ayawaso Central Municipality on the causes and effects of air pollution.

The program, which drew about 160 students, teachers, and representatives from the assembly, aimed to raise awareness about the impact of air pollution on human health, the environment, and the economy.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution is the second biggest threat to health in Ghana, claiming 28,000 lives annually.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Emmanuel Lamptey, Director of Infinity970, briefed the students about the campaign and its objectives. He highlighted the effects of air pollution on health and the environment, emphasizing that the situation can be avoided.

The students were taken through an interactive discussion on “Air Pollution and its Sources,” which featured communication materials such as TV adverts, radio jingles, and posters.

The session provided an opportunity for students to share their perspectives on air pollution and address misinformation.

One of the highlights of the event was when Mr. Lamptey broke down the staggering statistics on air pollution-related deaths, citing the WHO report. The students were shocked to learn that 28,000 people die annually from air pollution.

In her closing remarks, Madam Givens, Environmental Health Officer, led the students in a collective pledge to refrain from polluting the air and to educate others on the importance of clean air.

In an interview after the event, Mr. Nana Amoako, the Head of Research at Infinity 970, revealed that this is just one of several interactive sessions planned for communities, schools, and municipal assemblies.

He encouraged the public to take action against air pollution by calling or WhatsApping 0579 724072 or speaking to their Assembly members.

The campaign aims to empower communities to take ownership of their environment and promote a cleaner, healthier future for all.
