Tippers plea: axle load crackdown unfair, blame institutional failures

By Mavis Paintsil

The National Sand and Stone Tipper Truck Drivers Association is calling for accountability and fairness in the enforcement of axle load regulations, citing institutional failures as the root cause of the current crisis.

Drivers Not Solely Responsible for Overloading, Say Association

The Association argues that drivers are not solely responsible for overloading, pointing to the lack of weighing equipment at loading points and the varying weights of materials.

According to Mr. Anthony Mensah, National Public Relations Officer, the permissible weight limit of 30.5 tons is often exceeded due to customer demands and the physical design of the trucks, which can safely carry only 9-14.5 tons.

Association Seeks Fair Enforcement, Collaboration with Authorities

The Association has written to relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Roads and Highways, Ghana Standards Authority, and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, proposing solutions to the crisis.

They are calling for state-owned tipper trucks to be placed on rail bridges for fair enforcement and for authorities to take responsibility for the crisis.

The Association extended greetings to farmers and urged the incoming National Best Farmer to collaborate with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to combat illegal mining activities.
