President Mahama hands over vehicles to Ghana police service

By Mavis Paintsil, Accra

Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama has handed over 40 operational vehicles to the Ghana Police Service, declaring an unwavering commitment to protect every citizen and secure the nation’s peace.

The vehicles, which include 15 armoured pickups, five Cobra-4, and 20 Cobra-3 special armoured vehicles, are designed for high-risk environments, rugged terrain, and rapid response.

President Mahama warned criminal elements that the country will not surrender to them, saying “Let me state clearly. Our dear country Ghana will not surrender a single street, a community, or any public space to criminals, today, tomorrow, or forever.”

Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, expressed gratitude for the government’s support, saying the assets would significantly enhance the police’s capacity to combat crime and protect citizens.

“The vehicles are essential tools in a renewed fight against crime,” he said.

“With these vehicles, we are going to launch very bold, robust and targeted operations throughout the country. We will dismantle any existing criminal networks.”

The vehicles are part of a larger plan to retool and modernise the police service. More equipment, including tow trucks, covert Corvette operational vehicles, and drones, will be delivered soon.

President Mahama stressed that security must be coupled with accountability, saying “The police must not only be feared by wrongdoers, but citizens must also trust the police.”

He paid tribute to the service and sacrifice of police personnel, saying “To the courageous men and women… those who rush towards danger when all of us are running away… your service is valued.”

The Ghana Police Service is gearing up for a more aggressive fight against crime, thanks to 40 new operational vehicles handed over by President John Dramani Mahama.

Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, hailed the vehicles as a game-changer in the fight against crime.

“These vehicles are essential tools in a renewed fight against crime,” he said.

“We will use them to launch bold, robust, and targeted operations across the country, dismantling existing criminal networks.”

Yohuno praised President Mahama for prioritizing police safety and operational efficiency.

“It came as no surprise that one of the first things you did was to take steps to enhance officers’ safety, improve our operational efficiency, and ensure a high level of security across the country,” he said.

The IG also revealed that the police had recently arrested suspects impersonating police officers, and they are now facing court. “Our response was decisive and effective,” he said.

With the new vehicles, Yohuno warned criminals that the police are taking a tougher stance. “We will take on criminal elements head-on, while ensuring the safety of our officers,” he said.
