Nursing council launches fitness to practice policy to promote excellence in care

By Mavis Paintsil, Shaishi

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (N&MC) has launched a policy document to guide nursing and midwifery practitioners and trainees in delivering safe and compassionate care.

The 58-page document, known as the Nursing and Midwifery Fitness to Practice Policy, outlines responsibilities and expectations of practitioners and trainees, ways to report misconduct, and steps for handling complaints.

The policy aims to maintain high standards in nursing and midwifery practice, protect the public, and maintain public confidence in the profession.

It covers key areas such as sanctions, application for review by a practitioner, and functions of the fitness to practice committee.

Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, said the policy would ensure excellence, ethics, and accountability in nursing practice.

He emphasized the need for specialized training for nurses to handle non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and ensure high global standards.

The policy is a commitment to promoting ethical awareness among trainees and reinforcing accountability and competence among practitioners.

Practitioners and trainees are encouraged to adhere to the regulations and create awareness about the policy.

The launch highlights the importance of partnership between the N&MC and the Ministry of Health to design and implement training programs that produce competent nursing specialists.
