In a significant move towards promoting digital accessibility, the National Communications Authority (NCA) has launched an initiative to make technology more inclusive for persons with disabilities.
The initiative, marked by a ceremony at the NCA Tower, was held in collaboration with the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) to commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Acting Director General of NCA, Rev. Ing. Edmund Fianko, emphasized the importance of accessible technology, stating that persons with disabilities face significant barriers in accessing technological tools, which hampers their participation in education, financial services, and entertainment.
To address this issue, the NCA plans to introduce new minimum specifications for terminal devices, including accessibility features, and enhance the accessibility of its digital platforms.
“We aim to make our website more responsive and user-friendly for all, ensuring that every user, including Persons with Disabilities, can access information, navigate our services, and engage with us independently,” Rev. Fianko said.
The event highlighted the need for increased awareness and empowerment for persons with disabilities, aligning with this year’s theme, “Fostering Disability Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress.”
The NCA’s efforts are expected to promote transparency, inclusivity, and equal participation in Ghana’s telecommunications sector.
Key Highlights:
- NCA to introduce accessibility features in terminal devices
- Digital platforms to be made more accessible for persons with disabilities
- Initiative aims to promote inclusivity and equal participation in telecommunications sector.
