The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, has announced a significant breakthrough in the company’s efforts to improve water supply in the country.
According to him, the Kwanyako Water Treatment Plant, which had been facing operational challenges due to high turbidity levels, is now producing water at full capacity.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Mr. Mutawakilu attributed the success to significant engineering adjustments made to the plant.
“We had to do re-engineering by bringing the pumps up. That is why we are now able to produce 100% water,” he explained.
The plant, which supplies water to several communities, had been struggling with extreme cloudiness levels in the water, reaching over 11,000 NTU, far above its treatment limit of 2,500 NTU. This had severely affected production and disrupted supply.
However, Mr. Mutawakilu cautioned that the current level of production may not be sustained as the country approaches the dry season, which could lower water levels and affect operations again.
“The Kwanyako Treatment Plant is now working, with no high turbidity beyond the capacity of the plant. As we speak, the Kwanyako Treatment Plant is producing 100% water.
But that will not last long because the water level will drop as the dry season comes in,” he noted.
The GWL boss also highlighted the company’s financial constraints and called on corporate bodies to support efforts to desilt the plant’s pump intakes.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling illegal water connections and safeguarding the country’s water resources, emphasizing that efficiency and sustainability remain central to the company’s operations ¹ ².
Key Points:
- Kwanyako Water Treatment Plant: Now producing water at full capacity after months of operational challenges.
- Engineering Adjustments: Significant changes made to the plant, including moving pumps to the surface treatment area.
- Turbidity Levels: Previously reached over 11,000 NTU, far above the treatment limit of 2,500 NTU.
- Sustainability Concerns: Production levels may not be sustained during the dry season.
- Call for Support: GWL seeks assistance from corporate bodies to desilt pump intakes due to financial constraints.
