The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) and the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) Ghana Chapter have commemorated the 25th Anniversary of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.
The event, held on October 31, 2025, in Accra, served as a platform to assess progress, identify challenges, and outline future strategies for the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda in Ghana.
Empowering Women as Agents of Peace
Under the theme “Empowering Women as Agents of Peace: Strengthening Community Resilience through Inclusive Leadership,” the gathering reinforced Ghana’s commitment to enhancing women’s leadership and participation in peacebuilding efforts.
The Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, emphasized that Resolution 1325 recognizes women as vital agents of change, rather than mere victims of conflict.
Progress and Challenges
The Minister highlighted notable achievements under the WPS agenda, including the implementation of the first and second Ghana National Action Plans (GHANAP I and II) and the passage of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024.
However, she acknowledged emerging challenges such as cybersecurity, violent extremism, and climate-related risks, which the upcoming Ghana National Action Plan III (GHANAP III) will address.
Call to Action for Women’s Empowerment
The event concluded with a call to action for increased investment in women’s leadership across governance and security sectors.
The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection and its partners reaffirmed their commitment to promoting gender equality, inclusion, and peacebuilding, ensuring that peace initiatives reflect the voices and priorities of women at all levels.
Stakeholders Pledge Support
Development partners, including Dr. Afua Ansre from UN Women and Mr. Albert Yelyang from the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), praised Ghana’s advancements under the WPS framework and expressed their readiness to support ongoing gender-responsive peacebuilding initiatives.
The Chairperson of AWLN Ghana, Dr. Charity Binka, also emphasized the need for increased investment in women’s leadership to achieve lasting peace and security.
