The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations have commemorated World Food Day 2025 with a call for collaboration and innovation to transform Ghana’s agri-food systems.
The event, held on the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future,” marked FAO’s 80th anniversary in Accra.
The ceremony featured solidarity messages, flag-hoisting, and a keynote address by the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Mr. Eric Opoku.
Collaboration and Innovation Key to Transformation
Mr. Opoku emphasized that collaboration and innovation are crucial for transforming Ghana’s agri-food systems to ensure food security, climate resilience, and inclusive economic growth.
He outlined the government’s flagship Feed Ghana Programme, which aims to boost productivity, reduce food imports, create jobs, and empower youth and women through targeted value chains, mechanization, irrigation, and digital agriculture.
FAO’s Commitments to Ghana
The FAO Country Representative to Ghana, Priya Gujadhur, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with all partners in Ghana to accelerate progress towards zero hunger, ensure decent livelihoods for farmers, and protect the environment for future generations.
Global Solidarity Needed
The UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Mr. Zia Choudhury, called for greater gender balance, stronger support for youth and women, and increased awareness of the full journey behind every meal. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging the often unseen struggles behind the food we enjoy.
The commemoration highlighted the need for collective action to build resilient, inclusive food systems that nourish people and protect the planet.
