Ghana’s government has launched a six-week amnesty period, running from December 1, 2025, to January 15, 2026, for individuals to surrender unregistered or illegally acquired firearms without fear of prosecution.

- The initiative aims to reduce gun-related violence and strengthen the country’s arms control regime.
Key Measures:
- Amnesty Period: Surrender unregistered firearms without prosecution
- Collection Centers: Established in all districts with trained amnesty officers
- Suspension of Firearm Activities: Importation, sale, registration, and licensing of firearms suspended
- Digitalization: Transition to a fully digital system for firearm management
- Ban on Firearms:
- Temporary ban on use of firearms during traditional festivals and celebrations
Consequences for Non-Compliance:
- Security agencies will intensify swoops, searches, and border enforcement operations
- Offenders will be treated as criminals with firm and uncompromising consequences
The government urges citizens to take advantage of this amnesty to contribute to a safer and more secure Ghana.
