Disabled graduates threaten nationwide demo over unemployment

By Mavis Paintsil, Accra

Graduates with disabilities are set to take to the streets on March 24 if the government fails to address their crippling unemployment crisis.

The coalition of Unemployed Graduates with Disabilities issued the ultimatum after a one-month deadline expired without a concrete response from authorities.

Speaking at a press conference, Princess Mensah, a member of the coalition, lamented that despite their qualifications, many persons with disabilities remain jobless due to systemic barriers.

She cited the 2021 Population and Housing Census, which revealed that about 2.1 million Ghanaians live with a disability, yet unemployment among them is significantly higher than the national average.

Mensah referenced the Persons with Disabilities Act 2006 (Act 715), which mandates employment support structures and incentives for employers hiring persons with disabilities.

She warned that failure to implement these provisions marginalizes graduates with disabilities despite their qualifications.

Dr. Felix Obeng Asamoah, Executive Director of the Ghana Blind Union, emphasized that persons with disabilities are capable citizens who need opportunities to contribute meaningfully.

“We are all potential assets, and all we are asking for is an opportunity to prove that we are assets,” he said.

The coalition remains committed to peaceful advocacy but insists the demonstration will proceed if the government fails to present a clear roadmap for their employment.
