Workshop empowers media to drive Ghana’s gender equity agenda

By Mavis Paintsil, Accra

A workshop organized by Abantu for Development has equipped media practitioners with skills to advocate for the effective implementation of Ghana’s Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024 (Act 1121).

The training aimed to deepen journalists’ understanding of the law and address gender imbalances in national development processes. Speaking at the workshop, Dr Rose Mensah-Kutun, Executive Director of Abantu for Development, emphasized the media’s crucial role in keeping gender equity issues in the public space.

“The media has a responsibility to keep these issues in the public space,” she said, urging journalists to use their platforms to push for policy implementation.

Key areas of focus include public education to close knowledge gaps, adequate resources for the Gender Equity Committee, media advocacy for policy implementation, and addressing women’s low representation in governance.

A Legislative Instrument is being developed to clarify enforcement and monitoring procedures. According to Sheila Minkah-Premo, Convener of the Affirmative Action Coalition, the LI will provide mechanisms for institutions to comply with the law.

The law seeks to increase women’s participation in leadership, addressing historical and structural barriers that have limited their involvement in decision-making.
