Father of Special Needs Child Appeals to Government to Build More Special Schools

By Mavis Paintsil Accra

A 55-year-old casual worker at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Mr. Frederick Olusu Lache, has appealed to government to introduce more special schools for children with special needs.

According to him, special schools in the country are very limited and difficult to access, making it extremely difficult for parents.

Speaking in an interview, Mr. Lache who is a member of the Church of Christ at Ashaiman Lebanon, said caring for a special child is a lot of work and requires full-time attention.

He said while his own employment has not been affected so much, the challenge is about who stays home to take care of his daughter.

“My daughter does not talk. She doesn’t speak. I am thinking of taking her to school but I don’t know what she is going to learn there,” he said.

He revealed he is putting resources together to take her for an ENT assessment to determine whether she will be able to speak, which will help him know the category of school to take her to.

Mr. Lache advised other parents with special children to rely on medical reports and not be misled by superstition.

“When mine started, people came with a lot of things. They will tell you this thing is not normal, go here, do that. But if you believe what doctors tell you, it will help. Mine was detected at Tema General Hospital and I was referred to Korle-Bu,” he explained.

He cautioned parents against seeking help from juju men and some pastors who parade them and say all sorts of things.

He lamented that some parents who lack the courage end up abandoning their children at the seaside, describing it as very sad.

“Those of us who have the courage to stand with our children, we are now surviving. My advice is, when you have these special children, go to the hospital. Rely on the doctors’ report and just follow it. Don’t go and throw that child away,” he added.

He called on government to initiate a policy for special children to support parents, especially when parents must also work to feed their families.
