A new Political Environment Assessment Survey has put National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, and Food and Agriculture Minister, Eric Opoku, ahead in early perceptions among NDC delegates as potential flagbearers of the party.
The survey, conducted by Research and Data Management Consultant, Prof. Smart Sarpong (Presbyter), was carried out from September 10 to 20, 2026, across 11 regions, 136 constituencies and 350 communities. A total of 9,330 respondents were interviewed, comprising 5,580 stakeholders and 3,750 NDC delegates.
According to the report, dubbed Survey Report 1, which focused on Potential NDC Flagbearer Outlook, 27.6% of NDC delegates consider Johnson Asiedu Nketia as the Most Suitable candidate to lead the party, followed closely by Eric Opoku with 26.4%.
Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, polled 16.1%, former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu had 10.4%, Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang had 5.2%, Prof. Joshua Alabi, 4.4% and Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, 4.1%. About 5.3% of delegates said they did not know.
On who can best unify the party, Asiedu Nketia again led with 24.5%, followed by Eric Opoku with 20.4%. Ato Forson had 12.5%, Haruna Iddrisu 9.4%, while 16.3% of respondents were undecided.
The report further categorizes the aspirants by momentum:
- Rising: Eric Opoku
- Peaking: Johnson Asiedu Nketia
- Uncertain: Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Ato Forson and Prof. Alabi
- Declining due to extreme uncertainty: Haruna Iddrisu and Julius Debrah
On the general political temperature as at September 2026, 52.1% of voters described the country as calm, 35.3% as somewhat calm and 12.6% as not calm. Within the NDC, 63.1% said the party is calm, while for the NPP, 56.7% described it as calm.
The report also assesses voter economic sentiment, constituency needs and a pilot assessment of MMDCEs performance.
Prof. Sarpong emphasized that the findings do not predict who will win the NDC flagbearership, but rather reflect delegate perceptions at this early stage of the contest.
