Biomedical engineers key to transforming healthcare delivery in Ghana

By Mavis Paintsil, Tesano

The Head of Biomedical Engineering at the Ministry of Health (MoH), Dr. Nicholas Adjabu, has emphasized the critical role biomedical engineers play in ensuring patient safety and operational efficiency in healthcare facilities. Speaking at the closing session of the ninth Biomedical Engineers’ Training Programme in Accra, Dr. Adjabu highlighted the need for more biomedical engineers in hospitals across the country to enhance the quality, efficiency, and safety of healthcare delivery.

The Challenge:

  • Many hospitals in Ghana operate without biomedical engineers, hampering timely maintenance and repair of critical medical equipment.
  • Only a few facilities have dedicated personnel responsible for managing medical equipment.

The Solution:

  • The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH), has been training about 40 biomedical engineers annually to improve the management and maintenance of medical equipment in public health facilities.
  • The training program aims to build the technical capacity of healthcare engineers to manage the over 100,000 pieces of medical equipment used in public health facilities nationwide.

Key Highlights:

  • The 2025 KOFIH Local Training Programme for Biomedical Engineering Professionals brought together 40 biomedical engineers from public health facilities for a nine-day intensive training on medical equipment management.
  • Participants received training on various medical equipment, including autoclaves, chemistry analyzers, and ultrasound machines.
  • The program has enhanced the technical capacity and responsiveness of biomedical engineers, reducing the need for external support.

Call to Action:

  • Dr. Adjabu encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained immediately upon returning to their respective hospitals, starting with small initiatives that can attract funding and support.
  • The Country Director of KOFIH in Ghana, Bomin Yang, reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to supporting Ghana in strengthening its health system through continuous training and capacity building of biomedical engineers.
  • The Team Lead for the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) Biomedical Engineering, Engr. Ruth Appiah, for her part also called on newly trained biomedical engineers to utilize their skills and knowledge to improve healthcare delivery in their respective hospitals.
  • Engr. Appiah, emphasized the critical role biomedical engineers play in ensuring that life-saving medical equipment functions optimally.
  • The program aimed to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of biomedical engineers in maintaining medical equipment and supporting quality healthcare delivery.
  • ACrucial Role in Healthcare
  • Engr. Appiah stressed that biomedical engineers are essential to the healthcare team, responsible for ensuring that medical equipment is functioning properly. She encouraged participants to serve as change agents in their regions, promoting a culture of continuous learning and advocating for best practices in equipment management and maintenance.
  • A Step Towards a Stronger Healthcare System
  • By equipping biomedical engineers with the necessary knowledge and skills, the training program aims to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare delivery system. Engr. Appiah’s message highlights the importance of collaboration and continuous learning in achieving this goal.
  • As the newly trained biomedical engineers return to their respective hospitals, they are poised to make a meaningful impact on healthcare improvement in their communities [4].
